Champions League Semi-Final, First Leg | Wednesday 29 April 2026 | 8pm BST | Riyadh Air Metropolitano*

Arsenal travel to Madrid on Wednesday night for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, chasing a maiden European Champions League title against the side they beat 4-0 in the group stage earlier in the season. The away leg at the Metropolitano is a different proposition: Atlético hold a strong home record against English visitors and the atmosphere will be hostile from kick-off. Diego Simeone’s side have been inconsistent at home in La Liga with only two wins from their last nine, but the Champions League run has been the season’s priority and this Atletico Madrid side is more free scoring than Simeone’s reputation would indicate.

Atlético’s reputation for tight, low-scoring matches does not held up to recent evidence. Simeone’s side have scored three or more goals in eighteen fixtures this season, with twenty-two of their matches producing four or more total goals. The list includes putting five past Real Madrid in LALIGA, a 3-2 comeback against Barcelona to clinch their Champions League quarter-final, and another 3-2 at the Metropolitano on Saturday night against Athletic Club. Simeone himself put it plainly in his post-Barcelona press conference: “We’re a team that attacks better than we defend.” Seventy-two goals conceded across the campaign point in the same direction at the other end. The cautious, low-scoring 1-1 forecast that has dominated pre-match coverage sits at odds with everything the recent record shows.
